Succession Planning
When considering your succession plans the default for many is the outright sale to a third party, but there are other options which may result in a more favourable outcome for all involved.
We have seen the popularity of management buyouts (MBOs) increase over recent years and we believe this trend will continue. One of the main advantages of an MBO is that you are in the driving seat and in full control of your exit from your business.
To carry out a successful MBO, preparation is key, you need to have the individuals within the business who want to take on the responsibility as well as the skills to do so. This succession route will give you the best chance of ensuring that your legacy continues, as the individuals buying the business will have progressed and developed to now be in a position to run the business. It is likely the existing values, culture and approach will continue resulting in minimal disruption for your clients.
The stumbling block for many is the finance needed to carry out the MBO. In a lot of cases the individuals you would like to take over do not have the funds needed to acquire the equity in the business, possibly due to other large financial commitments such as mortgages and school fees.
If the above is stopping you from considering an internal succession plan there are people who can help. One option is Vertus, who work solely in the adviser succession space providing lending to facilitate adviser acquisitions. To date over 30% of their lending has been to help MBOs take place.
